Tell me about yourself, I can’t wait for the audience to know you the way I do, what do you like to do in your free time and what is one of your hobbies?
I am a Speech Language Pathologist and brand new business owner. I have worked in the schools for 7 years and recently resigned to stay home with my two baby girls, Faith (4) and Jenna (1). I have a loving husband of 10 years, Chad. He is my biggest supporter and has been a pillar in building my company. I started a cosmetic bag company with my handmade makeup and toiletry bags called Makeup Junkie Bags that has exploded over night! I am a HUGE bookworm and read about a book a week. I love all things related to fashion and beauty.
What are the three things that are most important to you?
My relationship with God.
My character as a person.
I feel like if I maintain these three things by putting as much heart as I can into them then I can achieve anything and peace of mind, joy and thankfulness will come by default.
Do you think it’s important to set goals and dream big dream?
I must tell you that I used to think I just had to follow suit with life and be an ordinary person doing my job every day like clockwork and being satisfied with a safe routine and stability. These things are so important and always will be…but Recently, I have had an eye opening experience (the launch of my company that all started with putting my homemade craft on Facebook). The overnight success of my cosmetic bags had me wondering why I didn’t share my craft with the world sooner and it made me question why I never thought I could achieve greater things or push myself to branch out and follow dreams. It makes me want to talk to people everywhere and advocate for pushing yourself to share your talents with the world.
What is your vision for your future?
My vision for the future is quite simple: Enjoy the daily blessings provided to me whether it be my family, my career, or my friends. I want to raise my girls in a way that would make my family proud. As far as my company goes, I have no idea where it is headed but the future sure looks bright!
When did you know you were called to do this?
I can’t really explain it. I just felt like I needed to put myself out there and see what happens. I am so glad I did! I feel like God has been nudging me for a year to stay home with the girls. I struggled back and forth with it for months. I actually was planning on working this year and resigned at the last minute even to the dismay of some of my superiors. I typically would never have done that. God nudged me. And then he had something spectacular waiting for me.
What were the defining moments in your life that helps you realize you’re calling and potential to change the world for the better?
I have always been a very vocal person. I talk to everyone I meet and share my life on social media constantly, with friends and family. I’m just one of those open book type of people. I feel like the years I have spent forming connections with people were a foundation God was laying for me to share my testimony in my life today. About a month ago two very different events occurred.
- I was diagnosed with skin cancer and recently underwent an in depth painful surgery removing multiple abnormal tissue areas from my body.
- I put my homemade cosmetic bags on Facebook and within three weeks I had thousands of bag orders.
I think God handed me a trial and a tribulation. He gave me the tribulation to get me through the trial. I want to share this testimony and not only advocate for people everywhere to take care of their body and stay on top of preventative care, but also I want to encourage them to follow dreams, take leaps of faith and never be scared to chase a dream!
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mother in law Gayle. She is without a doubt the most giving, loving person in my life. She introduced me to Speech Pathology ( a career I love). She taught me the basics of sewing and gifted me one of her sewing machines which is how I was even able to make my bags. She drops everything to be here for my husband and our family whenever we are in need and she has done this for 13 years expecting nothing in return. She is the only example of SELFLESS that I have and I strive to be to my family one day what she is to us.
Who has influenced you the most and what is the greatest lesson you learned from them?
My sister Lorraine has been a huge influence on my life. From a young age she was always mothering and protecting me. She taught me about joy and sorrow. She is very active in her church and even as adults, she shares her life experiences with me helping me to grow every day in my relationship with Christ and others. She is my best friend and I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t get to talk to her every day like I have for the last 31 years.
What does being a beauty queen mean to you?
To me, being a beauty queen means standing up for your beliefs, doing what’s right despite criticism, and treating people in a way that would satisfy God’s will. Exterior beauty is simple for most to achieve …but a beautiful soul takes effort and dedication and a desire for good.
What inspires you to live with passion every single day?
My nature of growth. I am a creature of progress and I love seeing things change and grow in positive ways. Also, my daughters. They are my reason for striving to be the best I can be. I want to create a wonderful loving life for them and teach them how to stand on their own and be proud of who they are.
How do you use that passion to make your dreams come true?
I use it to drive my motivation even when it seems easier to just give up and take the easy road when life gets challenging.
What is a quote or saying that you live by?
There are so many quotes out there that I could choose but instead id like to give you one directly from my heart because I firmly believe this:
“If you wake up every day and do your best to walk a Christian path whether it be your interactions with people, your home life, what you do in your spare time, how much effort you put into your job etc, you will lay your head down at night without worry because you will not have to wonder if you have failed. Your “best” is good enough…no wonder how it compares to somebody else’s “best”. Be content with your own unique strengths and weaknesses and do not compare yourselves to others for “YOU ARE FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE.”
Through the ups and downs of your life what is the greatest lesson that you have learned?
Life comes in seasons. Everything is temporary. If you have a great year, next year may be not so great. If you have a bad month, next month might be the best ever. Life is constantly changing seasons even though it is happening so slowly we don’t realize it. When my daughter was a newborn I remember thinking how tired I was and how on earth was I going to live like this with 2 hours of sleep a night. But then a few short months passed and that season was over. She slept. And I missed my 2 am dates with her rocking her to sleep after a feeding. LIFE IS A COLLECTION OF SEASONS THAT ARE EVER CHANGING.
What advice would you give the beauty queens reading this interview about following their dreams?
First…you are allowed to change and grow. You are not your past. You are not your mistakes. You are not mediocre. You are not “ordinary” and incapable of greatness. Everybody has greatness in them. Find yours and nourish it…..don’t bury it.
